“That Little Girl Looks Just Like You!”

March 25th, 2009

I heard this today from a complete stranger. I took Ruthie out to a special lunch at Baker’s Square (Because today is FREE SLICE day!) and as we were leaving this complete stranger said this to me. I don’t hear this a lot, mostly because when Chris is with us, there is no mistaking his features in the kids…however, it was nice to hear it. I thought I’d post a little comparison for you all, since most of you know that Ruthie has some of Chris’s more dominant features…

Ruthie

I guess of the 3, she looks the most like me. They all have some of my features, and Ruthie has a lot of my personality. She’s outgoing, fearless, compassionate, and loyal. take away Chris’s nose, and the darkness of her hair, and yeah, I suppose she does look a lot like me.

A Short Trip To Indianapolis, IN

March 25th, 2009

Chris had some work to do in Indianapolis, and Art (His Dad), I, and the kids decided to tag along. While chris worked, we went to the zoo (Thursday), and then to the Children’s museum (Friday). We met up with a friend of Art’s, Joe that moved down there, and we all had a great time! Ruthie has adopted Joe to be her 4th Grandpa! Here are some pics! I am choosing a few because to post them all would overwhelm you!

Indianapolis Zoo

There were a lot of animals out and about. We had a wonderful time walking around and seeing them all!

We were sitting on the highest row in the “Splash Zone”. The only other zoo I’ve been to is Brookfield, and you never get really wet there – ever! We had no idea what it was going to be like. The show was great, and near the end the dolphins drenched us. I had the diaper bag closed – with the camera inside (Luckily!). Charlie and Lily were on my left side, both of them were 100% dry! My right side, diaper bag, and Ruthie got DRENCHED! Soaked doesn’t even begin to cut it! Ruthie started crying, and I stood up and I threw my coat over her to protect her from getting wet again. There were no more big splashes. Poor Ruthie. After the show, Grandpa and Joe came down from the higher seats they were on (Out of the Splash Zone) and Grandpa wrapped Ruthie up in his coat (Pictured). I emptied out my diaper bag’s front pockets and drained the water. Luckily the zipper kept the water out and off my camera in the main pouch. It was a mess. Fun, but would have been more fun if it’d been in the 70’s or 80’s, not 50’s. This photo was taken in the underwater area under the dolphin pools. They swim overhead, and it’s really neat!

I also got a photo of one of the rarest mammals around…

This little fella wanted to go to the park, and told me I was “Ruining his life at the zoo” because I wouldn’t let him go. We ended up going just before the Dolphin show.

Indianapolis Children’s Museum

The kids learned so much! There were dinosaurs, dress up areas, Lego land, trains, water works, fairytale land, play area, and so many more things! They learned about sharing, cooperation, and even things like racism, segregation, and intolerance. We all learned a lot. I even learned a lot. I learned about a boy named Ryan White.

In his exhibit were all his toys, bed, everything that was in his room. Also scrapbooks his Mother made and letters from nurses. It was heartbreaking. I’m not sure that I could ever remove everything from my deceased child’s room, let alone donate it to the museum. Until I saw the exhibit, I never even knew this boy existed. I’m so sorry for his Mother’s loss. He was a hemophiliac who developed HIV and AIDS from tainted blood transfusions.

Sears Tower Forever!

March 18th, 2009

Sears Tower forever

What a shameful attack on another “towering” Chicago icon. Since its completion in 1973, the Sears Tower has been an international superstar among skyscrapers. It was the tallest building in the world for many years and is still the tallest in the United States. This is no time to be tugging at Super-building’s cape and renaming it Willis Tower. It might as well be Smith Tower. Or, maybe more appropriately, with apologies to John Cleese, Fawlty Tower.

I should acknowledge my personal bias in the naming issue. My father, Warren “Duke” Skoning, was the vice president of real estate and construction for Sears when the tower was built. The project was his baby, and how he loved it. From conception to completion, he lived the design and construction of the landmark building with remarkable passion.

Sears had been headquartered on the Near West Side at Homan Avenue and Arthington Street since 1906. The company prospered there and grew into a retail and catalog sales giant that dominated the industry.

However, the neighborhood fell upon hard times as jarring urban changes occurred in the late ’60s. Sears decided change was in order. As would be expected in the corporate world, the company established a strategic planning team given the task of presenting options on relocation of the headquarters.

A number of options for the relocation were considered. One was to develop a sprawling suburban corporate campus (similar to what Motorola, McDonald’s and Baxter, among others, have done). Another idea, somewhat out of the blue, and moderately risky, was to develop the world’s tallest building in downtown Chicago. No one thought the latter could possibly appeal to Sears’ executive leadership.

Somehow, Mayor Richard J. Daley got wind of the tallest building proposal. As the ultimate promoter of everything downtown Chicago, he saw major economic development opportunity and made it clear Sears should and would opt for the tallest-building-in-the-world option. The mayor made it crystal clear that zoning and building code hurdles would be no problem for Sears. Economic development and the stream of tax dollars in the city’s future would trump any of those petty concerns.

His Honor got his way, and Sears decided to relocate its headquarters to a city lot bordered by Wacker Drive, Franklin Street, Jackson Boulevard and Adams Street, where the Sears/Big Willie Tower stands today. An alley on the property caused an issue about relocation of utilities. The city agreed to assume the minimal cost of relocating the utilities, which the late Len O’Connor claimed in his book “Clout” was an example of corrupt corporate influence in the city. My father’s response to O’Connor’s assertion was that Sears would pay more in city taxes every day than the total cost of the utilities relocation project.

My brother and I had a unique opportunity to explore the Sears Tower as it neared completion. We rode in a construction elevator to the 110th floor of the building, then in the final stages on construction.

With panic in our eyes, we walked out onto wooden planks across the I-beams that framed the top floor of the building. Steeplejacks and other bold construction workers scurried around the wind-swept top deck as if it were the ground floor. All in all, it was a frightening experience, even for my brother, who was a seasoned Navy fighter pilot with numerous aircraft carrier landings. Fighting acrophobia, we braced ourselves against the howling wind and gazed out at the amazing panorama of metropolitan Chicago that has attracted millions of visitors to the Skydeck in the 36 years since the tower’s completion. We were shamelessly proud of our dad. A father stands tall in the eyes of his sons, but all the more so 1,450 feet up.

We felt proud of our city, and even more proud that the Sears Tower would dominate the skyline for years to come. We thought the “Sears Tower” would be a lasting monument to our great city and tribute to our retail merchandising heritage for decades to come.

The Sears Tower will always be the Sears Tower to me and our family. Like other Chicago icons, there are those of us who will never think otherwise … Marshall Field’s, Comiskey Park, the Chicago Stadium, the Wrigley Building and dare I say Tribune Tower.

Naming rights be damned. Sears Tower forever.

Gerald Skoning is a Chicago lawyer

Being from Chicago, Chris and I feel exactly the same, word for word. The Sears Tower will always be Sears Tower, and so far, I haven’t spent a dime at Macy’s. It’s a nice store, but I just can’t do it. I’m not sorry about that either. Marshall Field’s was a Chicago institution. We may as well re-name the city “Youbuyityounameit-ville, USA” I can’t believe this. More wasted money by corporate America or should I say Corporate UK in this case since they are based in LONDON! Really, re-name your own f-ing landmarks and stay out of MY CITY! Assholes!

It’s True What They Say…

March 16th, 2009

you really can’t go “home again”. We’ve been living here since September 2004 – officially. I was here with Charlie before that, so Charlie and I have lived in Illinois since July 2004. It’s ok, but it’s not great. I have almost no friends here. I have some friends, ones that I made on the INTERNET prior to moving, and one that I made once we were here. However, the one that I made up here moved away, and now I have no-one local as the other friend is far south (About a hour and 45 minutes drive door to door.). I miss my life that I had in Virginia. I know that sounds strange, but I miss being able to call up any number of my friends and being comfortable enough to tell them anything. I miss that a lot. I hate it here. Maybe it would be better if we were able to go ahead and move, maybe not? Not if it’s another town like this, full of self-serving generation-ME’ers. I hate them all. They are all so pretentious and judgmental. I can’t stand it. I want to scream, to cry, and to pack all my stuff and leave this god-forsaken place. I want to go back to my home, where I started my new life with Chris, and where I made quality friends that were more than a fake smile deep. I miss real people that genuinely care about other people. I’m lonely. I need friends and I’m sad. Nobody understands how alone I feel here. I hate it. It’s nice to be near our families, but the people around where I live are horrid, and I just want to escape. Please say a prayer our house sells, I’m not sure how much more of this I can take.

Thanks,
Sabrina

I am prepared-not?

March 9th, 2009

I have to say that after birthing 3 children I have attempted to prepare myself well in the pain handling department. I am now on day 6 of the horrible, blinding pain radiating from my back to my right hip, and down my right leg. I don’t know if I would call the leg involvement pain, because it’s mostly a mixture of discomfort and numbness at skin level. It’s a very odd sensation. I would however, call the pain in my back the worst possible lasting pain I’ve ever experienced. Certainly I’ve had pain like this before, in labor, but it’s always been gone in less than 20 hours. However, I’m on day 6, more than 144 hours later and I’m still having the pain. I can barely sleep. Cold doesn’t help, heat doesn’t help, Tylenol doesn’t help, and stretching so far, has not helped for more than about 20 minutes. I’m at a loss. The only thing that has remotely helped was having Charlie sit on the area creating the radiating pain; but since he has to sit completely still, that doesn’t work for long. He starts moving and the numbness in my leg gets worse. I’ve been to the chiropractor and I’m still in excruciating pain. I’m now considering either visiting a conventional family practice doctor (of which I currently do not have) or chewing or sawing off the lower half of my body. I’m still considering the options. I want this pain to end. Any suggestions?

Either think of something, quick, or hand me the saw!

I’m excited. Really excited! I’m going to Vegas in April without the kids! It will be myself, and my Aunt Gloria, and nobody else! YAY! I’m afraid to leave the kids, but at the same time so so very excited to have an actual vacation! Chris will be staying home off work to be with the kids, and I can’t wait to hear how it goes for him (I’m sure he will be cheating and spending time at Grandma and Grandpa’s house for help). I can see a light at the end of the home alone with the kids all the time tunnel…Viva Las Vegas baby!

Quotable Wednesday

February 25th, 2009

Lily got me up at 5:30 today. I didn’t exactly appreciate that, but hey, a girl’s gotta eat. I fed her, changed her, played with her, and then when she fell back to sleep aroun 6:20 so did I. I was awoken around7:30 by Charlie using his little fingers to pry my eyes open. He then told me that “Brown Eyes Suck” and he wants blue or maybe yellow like snickle (the cat). If he hadn’t been so terribly serious I might have laughed. It must be rough when Daddy’s not here, he’s the only brown-eyed one of the bunch so far….maybe in the future he’ll get a little brown-eyed brother.

Terrible Tuesday

February 24th, 2009

I am going to start off this post by saying that we finally got the check from the realtor! We finally got our money back! yeah! Chris had to drive over there and get it, but we have it, and it’s back in our bank account!

Now onto the more important things…

Ruthie pooped on the floor today – Twice

Then she rubbed it on her Dora shirt and into her hair.

The cat barfed all over the carpet today – Twice

Chris is gone again.

Single parenting sucks.

The knob on the old dryer broke off, so now I have to use a pliers to get it to set a time for the cycle.

It also occurred to me today that my family is 3x’s bigger than my Mom’s. I mention this because when she comes up here she’s always talking about how I have all this laundry to do…well there are 5 of us. So there is always something that will need washing. Anyway, she sorts it all into little tiny piles and ends up with about 8 loads. 8 loads is insane. I would never have time to sit here and do 8 loads, so I lump them all together and throw in God’s greatest creation, a Shout Color Catcher. If you’ve never used them, get some! They are great! Darks and whites, pinks, whatever can all go in together. What my mother puts into 8 I easily get into 3. Whew, 3 loads, that’s a LOT. I thought it was funny how she does things so differently having been the parent of one child compared to a crazy mom of 3.

I miss the gym. I haven’t been in a couple weeks because of Ruthie’s arm (She can’t go to the daycare until her brace is off) and one of us being sick.

I guess that’s about all the random thoughts for today; without the check I would say this was the worst day in at least a week!
